...That moment when you lose faith in your hair

I recently had an encounter that sort of tore through my heart.

I had my hair in the style above... except that the front was not in a twist out. It was in a hump like the ones in the back. I thought it looked pretty good and was feeling quite good about it.

I wore this style to work and went out after work. I was in the company of a male friend who had not had a hair cut in a while and was looking a bit shabby at the end of the work day. So someone commented on his hair and said "When are you gonna get a hair cut? Your hair is looking kind of shabby. Is that how you wore your hair to work?"

His response was "Well I am gonna get a hair cut this week, but what's wrong with my hair? It was combed this morning when I went to work. Look at HER hair though. And that's how SHE went to work"

HER was me! Now normally a comment like that would not bother me. But it did because when I saw this person earlier on, they commented on my hair and said they liked it. And now that someone said something negative about their appearance, I get thrown under the bus.

That comment probably cut through me more than it should have. But in that moment, it made me lose faith in my hair and for a split second, I wished my hair was different. I wished it was silky straight, no frizz, long and bouncy. It made me wish for weave. For something that is not me. It made me question myself and lost faith in not only my hair, but in myself.

Then I snapped out of it when I took a look of myself in the mirror. I looked into the mirror expecting to see the defeated woman that I had just imagined myself to be. Instead I saw a woman who had a crown to be so proud of. I saw a woman who wakes up every day and decides to go against mainstream. I saw a woman who believes in her naturality and praises the blessings bestowed upon her from above. The ability to love yourself in all of your naturalness is the greatest blessing of all time.

I am posting this because I know that every now and then, we all face that moment, that comment, that picture, that look, that raised eyebrow that makes you second guess yourself. That makes you doubt yourself. That makes you feel defeated. But what makes us the graceful, beautiful and wonderful women that we are/aim to be, is the strength we take from difficult moments. We use it as a stepping stone to become stronger and mightier in our faith. This person's comment was not was not the reason I was hurt. It was the fact that I allowed someone's opinion to make me second guess myself, that's what hurt the most.

I LOVE MY HAIR AND ALL OF THE CRAZINESS THAT COMES WITH IT!!!

Protective Hairstyles.

I loooovvvveeeee my hair and always want to keep it protected. But some protective styles are just NOT cute. lol

And its really hard to find cute protective styles for short hair. But oh well, we must make do.

Below are some options I frequently use:

Single braids are ALWAYS a classic protective style.

The only thing is, you have to be extremely careful of your edges. If you are like me and you have weak edges, you CANNOT do any of the following:
  • Keep you braids in for too long (longer than one month)
  • Braid the edges too tight or too small. (use equal amount extension and hair- you do not want to weigh down those fragile edges).
  • Leave your hair unwashed for more than 2 weeks. The dirt builds up and keeps your hair from benefiting from the new nutrients and oils being added.
  • Forget to moisturize either daily or once every 2 days.
Best protective style EVERRRRRR!!! Love it!!

And of course, there is always the infamous hat- especially in winter.

I don't always wear hats, but when I do, I go for the ones with a little subtle design. Like the flower on this one. (I will post pics later of how I personally transform a plain ol' hat to something pretty that you would want to wear every day lol)

When wearing hats, it is important to make sure that you hair is at least a little presentable. Accidents happen ladies!! lol

I remember seeing this picture and wishing so damn badly that I could duplicate this style. But knowing oh so well that my short hair would never be able to do this.

But being as stubborn as I am, i refused to let a little thing like length get in the way. So I did this:

I totally loved and enjoyed the attention this style got me. PLUS my hair is protected fully at the back!!

That is all for now lovelies!!

And remember, always LYH!!!

Wave Nouveau

These are the wave nouveau products I use.

Once I apply the moisturizing finishing lotion on a clean head of hair. I  am good to go till the next wash. Every morning, I freshen my curls with the Finishing Mist.
I use the hair pudding or the smooth edge gel to keep my edges down if they don't wanna stay on their own.

Wave Nouveau on freshly washed hair... worn as a wash and go.
The best part of this is that unlike gel, it keeps your hair moisturized and does not flake.

Back with updates!! :)

I've been gone for a while...

I am not really used to having a blog so keeping it updated has been sort of a challenge for me. But I am back with some updates.

So last time I was here, I was trying out the Mane n' Tail brand. Well, sorry to say, that didn't really work for me. So I left it alone.

I am back to what last worked for me and that is my wave nouveau. I started using this product about a year ago and I am really not sure why I stopped using it to try something else. I think its because I was looking for something that would give me a miracle growth (lol).

But honestly, the wave nouveau has grown my hair faster than any other hair product.I chopped off about 3 inches in the summer and when I checked in January, my hair is back exactly where it was before I cut it. I was amazed by this only because normally my hair grows slower than this. But nonetheless, I was quite happy about the progress.

I will be making another post with picture of styles I wore throughout this period other than my staple style in my previous post.

Products!!!

Ok!

So everyone has their opinion on what products are best for your hair and what products do what.... To all that, I say "It is best for your hair, but not for mine!"

Like I said before, the hair journey is all about trial and error!

I have tried many different products and some of them may have worked, but I don't usually stick around long enough to find out. I always end up buying a new one because someone told me it was great.

Well  now I have decided to stick with a few hair products for about 6 months, to see how it makes my hair feel. So far, it is the best decision I have made.

The products above are the only products I use now. Plus my wave nouveau moisturising lotion and finishing mist (N/A in this pic). Also, I use eggs and extra virgin olive oil to deep condition.

I hardly shampoo because my hair is thin and shampoos always make my hair feel soo dry. But I do it once every 3 weeks or so. I co-wash (washing my hair with conditioner) twice a week or once a week if I'm really busy.
After washing my hair, I apply quite a bit of wave nouveau moisturizing lotion and a bit of Olive Oil Shine Moisturizer (sometimes), oil my scalp with Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) and seal my hair with the JBCO. Then I style as I please. :)

P.S: that's just what I do. Your hair type may be different, so your regimen may be different too.

STYLE OF THE DAY
(Well its really the style I wear the most).

It is easy and quick to do, low maintenance and helps with retaining length.

I section off the front part of my hair and push it to the side. The I put the rest of my hair in a pony tail close enough to the sectioned off hair. I fluff my hair to the side I want it on that day.
I wrap my hair in a silk scarf when going to bed. When I wake up in the morning, I just have to re-fluff the hair in front and reapply my Wave Nouveau Moisturizing Lotion and then spray my whole head with Wave Nouveau Finishing mist. I finish by brushing away stray hair, to neaten the pony tail.
(This takes less than 5 minutes in the morning)

Because of the Wave Nouveau, my hair stays moisturised all day. Every now and then, I seal in the moisture with Jamaican Black Castor Oil. (Any other oil can be used).

These pictures were taken around 6:30 p.m. After 8 hours of work!

Why did I start a blog?????

I still can't believe that I have a blog. Just thinking about it feels weird, but oh wellz!

I started this blog because I get asked soooo many questions about hair and my boyfriend who happens to be around when people are asking me hair questions, suggested that I create a blog and just direct people to find the answers to their questions.
I am really not a blogger. I really prefer to answer specific questions pertaining to that person's hair as opposed to posting general info on hair. In reality, there is no real general rule for hair. Everyone's hair is different and not all rules or regimens work for everyone. I can usually answer questions about almost all hair types, but I cannot guarantee that my recommendations will work.
I have come to learn that with hair, its usually trial and error. You will never know what works for your hair unless you try it. I may have the same exact hair type as person B, but the products I use will not have the same effect on person B's hair.

At this point, my hair is far from where I want it. But I have decided to stick with it this time around and stay away from heat and from cutting it.

My goal is simple: HAPPY HEALTHY HAIR.
For me, that means retaining length, thickening my edges and keeping my curls intact.

That is all.

Your goals may be different from mine, but I may know a thing or 2 about how you can achieve your goals. So ask questions if you have any.

Thank you for reading :)
